A

Above the fold (phr)

- the position of any story or art that runs on the top half of the front page, the most desirable position in the paper.

Banner (n) = ribbon, streamer

- a headline that stretches all the way across the page.

- tít lớn chiếm hết trang báo

Bureau (n)

- a news office away from the main newspaper or wire service.

- văn phòng đại diện của  tờ báo, văn phòng thường trú

Brief (n)

- A story of only a few paragraphs. Usually run together in groups called packages, briefs are becoming more prominent in modern newspapers.

- Tin vắn. Thường được đăng thành nhóm gọi là chùm tin vắn.

Broadsheet (n)

- a full-sized newspaper

- báo khổ lớn

Byline (n)

- the writer’s name at the top of a story.

- tên tác giả ở đầu bài báo

Community journalism (n)

- any media focused on a specific, geographically community

- báo (đài) địa phương

Correction (n)

- an explanation of an error that appeared in print.

- đính chính

Correspondent (n)

1. a reporter who writes from a bureau or anywhere other than the main newspaper office.

- phóng viên thường trú

2. the reporter may or may not be a full-time employee of the newspaper. Also called a stringer.

- cộng tác viên.

Cub reporter (n)

- trainee reporter, beginning reporter

- phóng viên mới vào nghề

Cutline (n)

- the caption explaining a photo or other piece of art.

- chú thích ảnh

Editor-in-chief (n)

- the top news executive at a newspaper, responsible for all editorial content.

- tổng biên tập

File (v)

- to submit a story to an editor, especially from a remote location.

- nộp bài cho biên tập viên, đặc biệt là từ xa

Grip and grin (phr)

- a boring photograph of two people shaking hands and smiling.

- bức ảnh nhàm chán đăng hai người bắt tay nhau và mỉm cười

Gutter (n)

- white space that runs vertically between columns on a page, wide enough to seperate the columns.

- khoảng trắng giữa các cột trên trang báo

Gutter press (n)

- press that engages in sensational journalism (especially concerning the private lives of public figures).

- báo lá cải, báo chuyên đăng tin giật gân (nhất là đời tư của những người của công chúng)

Headline (n) = hed

- a concise summary of a story, set in large type.

- tiêu đề bài báo

Journalese (n) = newspaperese

- language typical of journalists and newspapers or magazines, characterized by use of neologism and unusual syntax. Journalism is simply a journalism-specific form of cliche.

Layout (n)

- The process of deciding when to place various elements (type, photos and so on) on a page.

- Dàn trang, công đoạn thiết kế trang báo.

Managing editor (n)

- the editor who directs the daily news operation

Newsroom (n)

- an office in which news is processed by a newspaper or news agency or television or radio station

News service (n)

- (formerly called wire service), a news organization that gathers news for dissemination by other news organizations. The Associated Press is one of the best known news services.

Off the record (phr)

- when said by a source, off the record means a reporter cannot publish the information the source is offering.

- không được đăng (từ dùng của người cung cấp tin), nghĩa là phóng viên không được đăng thông tin (thường là nhạy cảm, riêng tư…) do nguồn tin cung cấp.

Source (n)

- a person or document that provides information for a story.

Subhead (n)

1. a boldface line of type within the body of a story, used as an organization tool and a point of entry.

- tít dẫn

2. a smaller head (deck) runs below a hammer head or other large headline.

- tít phụ

Tabloid (n)

- a smaller newspaper, one that resembles a broadsheet (full-sized newspaper) folded in half and turned vertically.

- báo khổ nhỏ

Take (n)

- a page of copy, as in “This is a three-take story.” Not often used for computerized copy, except by the wire services.

- a reporter having long experience

Wooden head (n)

- a boring headline.

- Tiêu đề không hấp dẫn, nhàm chán
